Getting involved with St. Simon’s is easy - we have a variety of
needs....
Volunteering
Each program requires two volunteers. The volunteers share
responsibilities for their school. The volunteers are responsible for
checking in on the programs two to three times a month, ordering
supplies (bread, milk, juice, etc.), and coordinating the two annual
parties - Christmas and end-of-year. The time commitment is minimal and
the reward is infinite! Many, but not all, tutor or read with the kids.
In many cases, they have organized and supported groups of people from
their church, neighborhood, and work friends, to visit the programs on a
regular basis to tutor, assist with homework and to read.
Funding
The program runs so efficiently that it only costs $2.10 per day to care
for a student. While this is an extraordinary feat, it still means that
each program costs $630/month - or $382 to care for one student for the
entire year.
Supplies
The program uses quite a bit of perishable goods - milk, juice, bread,
peanut butter, etc. It also uses napkins, school supplies, and other
sundries. Any ability to contribute to defray the purchasing of the
items would be greatly appreciated!
Parties
Twice per year the students have a party. St. Simon’s pays for pizza or
a similar type treat and also party favors.
