DISD
Recognizes Partners in Education
The Dallas ISD honored its volunteers during the April 22 Board of
Trustees meeting. Trustees and the superintendent presented awards to
top donors and supporters and to district staff who coordinate volunteer
programs in recognition of their contributions to schools and the
district as a whole.
St. Simon’s After-School Program received the
2010 Superintendent’s Award. St. Simon’s works with
students ages 5-9 whose families qualify for free lunch and who do
not have adults available to care for them after school. The
students are provided a safe place, a nutritional snack, and
encouragement and assistance with academic and social development.
The program has been successfully serving families in Dallas ISD for
more than 50 years.

Receives DISD 2010 Superintendent's Award
DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojoso has selected St. Simon's for the Superintendent's Award for 2010 for outstanding ongoing support of Dallas ISD. The Superintendent gives these awards to institutions that provide outstanding support on a district-wide basis, including volunteer service, special programs, funding or a combination of all of these - St. Simon's qualifies for all of the above. This award is a testament to all the hard work and dedication shown by our Board members, volunteers, partners, and contributors.
"DISD is so pleased to honor the work of St. Simon's as you have supported the students of Dallas for so many years - you've touched the lives of many children. I am sure the benefits for them and for their families are more than be described in a short time and space, but know we are so grateful for your assistance and support and look forward to many more years of partnership to come."
Although he is no longer with us, a special thanks
for this award goes to John Cook. John, of course, advocated tirelessly
on St. Simon's behalf.

Students Reaching Out to Others
St. Simon's students are taking part in Pennies for
Peace, a program created by Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of
Tea. Each child can be in service to others even with a donation of
one penny. This past year our 400 student's were able to donate $247 in
pennies to Pennies for Peace which funds building of schools in Pakistan
and Afghanistan where one penny buys a pencil, and one dollar funds one
child’s education for a whole month. This service of our children to
others is having a joyous effect upon the young people of St. Simon’s.
